ILO Deputy Director to celebrate 75th anniversary here

JAKARTA (JP): The Deputy Director of the International Labor Organization (ILO), Heribert Maier, will arrive here on Sunday to begin a five-day visit to commemorate the organization's 75th anniversary.

Maier's visit will be highlighted by a reception with Indonesia's Minister of Manpower, Abdul Latief, on May 3.

The ILO is an autonomous agency associated with the United Nations whose aim is to improve the working conditions and living standards of laborers.

It was established on April 11, 1919 under the Treaty of Versailles and has 168 member nations.

During his stay in Jakarta, Maier will give a number of talks on various labor topics covering wage issues, labor legislation and industrial societies.

The seminar will be held next Tuesday afternoon at the Sari Pan Pacific Hotel.

Herman Van der Laan, the ILO Jakarta office director, said the activities are part of the organization's efforts to stimulate industrial relations and expose the work of the ILO.

As part of the anniversary celebrations, a writing contest for journalists will be held with the theme of "Indonesian Industrial Relations in the coming Second-Long Term Development Plan."

Entries must be submitted by August 31, with the eventual winner and runner-up, under sponsorship of Garuda Indonesia and KLM Dutch airlines, going to the ILO headquarters in Geneva.

At a press conference announcing Maier's arrival, Herman yesterday also unveiled the 1994 World Labour Report.

This year's annual report focuses on the world employment situation, work and family, health care and chemicals in the working environment. (07)
