Illegal workers deported
PEKANBARU, Riau: The Malaysian government has been deporting a monthly average of 2,000 Indonesian workers for trying to illegally enter the country from the Dumai port.
Sudarjono of the immigration department at Riau provincial office of justice said that 10,861 illegal workers have been deported between January and June through ports along the east coast of Sumatra.
A number of workers have been found using fake traveling documents. According to Sudarjono, in 1996 alone at least 100 passport have been obtained from the deported illegal workers.
Riau Governor Soeripto has recently ordered security apparatus to increase vigilance over labor-brokers who promised workers employment in the neighboring country using false documents. (14)
