Illegal quarry to be controlled

CIREBON, West Java: The local administration has said that it would stop illegal quarrying in nearby villages after three sand quarriers were killed in the Waled Asem district last week.

The three were killed by a landslide, Antara news agency reported.

Djadja Supardja, a staff of the administration, said yesterday that the authorities had tried to control the quarry activities but to no avail.

Djadja said that the administration has planned to take illegal quarriers to court if they continue their activities.

"But we still have to prepare a legal basis for that," he said.

The news agency said that some illegal quarrys are still operating in the mountains. They lack technical planning and safety measures.

The regency administration only allows 20 companies to quarry sand, he said. (05)
