Illegal gun possession common

MEDAN, North Sumatra: Unlicensed handguns in Medan are believed to have come from Thailand and Hong Kong, Medan Legal Aid Institute (LBH) director said on Wednesday.

"The handguns must have been smuggled in from Thailand and Hong Kong through Tanjung Balai Karimun (in Medan)," Irham Buana Nasution said, as quoted by Antara.

He added that it would come as no surprise to him if Indonesians of Chinese descent, "who have much money," were able to buy firearms.

"With Rp 3.5 million (US$400) to Rp 5 million, one can get a handgun. The guns don't necessarily have police permits," he said.

"Those who illegally possess firearms should be arrested," Irham added. (ylt)
