IDI members insured against malpractice

JAKARTA (JP): PT Asuransi Allianz Utama Indonesia signed an agreement on Wednesday with the Indonesian Doctors Association (IDI) to provide coverage against malpractice claims.

"This scheme is designed to protect both doctors and patients," IDI vice chairman Achmad Djojosoegito said, adding that the insurance would help doctors face possible malpractice charges in a proper and fair procedure.

There was limited details of the new arrangement, but according to Achmad "the insurance company will pay material compensation to the victims" once a court and a medical review determines that a doctor was negligent or committed a procedural mistake.

"However, we are still discussing the insurance premium so as not to burden doctors," Achmad said.

IDI boasts a membership of some 40,000 medical practitioners nationwide.

"This way, the doctors can be more self-assured in conducting their duties," he added.

Also present during Wednesday's ceremony was Allianz Utama Indonesia president director Manfred Wittau. The company is part of the Allianz Group, which has 200 companies in 70 countries as members, with total assets of US$600 billion. (edt)
