'I try to reduce my spending'
Data from the Central Bureau of Statistics (BPS) shows that the number of smokers aged 15 and above has been increasing annually. In 1995, the number of smokers was 6 million, but eight years later it jumped to seven million. In commemorating World No Tobacco Day, which fell on Monday, The Jakarta Post asked some people for their stance on the issue of smoking in public places.
Hendrianto, 30, is a research assistant with the International Monetary Fund. He lives in Grogol, West Jakarta:
I find that the existing no-smoking areas are quite adequate. However, I find it annoying that there are no such areas in public places, like bus terminals or railway stations.
Once, I watched a play at the Jakarta Playhouse in Pasar Baru, Central Jakarta, I was very disappointed that some smokers puffed away freely as there was no sign indicating that they shouldn't.
Some restaurants, also, do not provide special no-smoking areas. A fact that apparently prompts insensitive smokers to smoke any place they please.
I also hate people smoking on public transportation, such as minivans or buses. They are so annoying as these vehicles are usually packed with people.
Ucok, 25, is a student of Persada Indonesia University, Central Jakarta, majoring in political science. He lives with his parents in Tangerang:
I'm a smoker, so I don't think I'm a suitable person to ask about no-smoking issues related to World No Tobacco Day.
However, I think the intensive effort to warn the public on the health-related hazards of smoking -- and the campaign to quit or reduce consumption -- is a good thing.
I also think the policy to provide special smoking rooms is a positive step, because we have to respect the rights of non- smokers, especially their right to clean air.
I am trying to cut down on cigarettes. Not for health reasons, but merely because I'm trying to reduce my spending. I used to smoke two packs a day, but now it's just one pack a day.
Just don't ask me not to smoke after a meal, or when I'm enjoying a cup of coffee -- it's impossible. And, never offer me a non-filtered clove cigarette, because I will smoke it without a second thought.
