I refer to Franklin D. Roosevelt
Thank you for finally printing my letter, which appeared on Feb. 15, 2000. In editing it, however, it appears that the editor made a rather crucial mistake.
It was made in the sixth paragraph, beginning "To be fair on Gus Dur...". The editor inserted the word "Theodore" before the word Roosevelt, when I was in fact referring to Franklin D. Roosevelt. I thought I had made this reference implicitly clear, since I was also referring to the Great Depression of the 1930s in the same sentence. Theodore Roosevelt is a man from a completely different historical period.
In any case, I would also like to say that I was satisfied with the latest development concerning General Wiranto. This relief came after witnessing a series of unnerving and cryptic maneuvers made by President Abdurrahman Wahid. No doubt, it was vintage Wahid. I sincerely hope the best for our President. President Wahid's goal to create a democratic and pluralist Indonesia should be supported. But we must not back down from criticizing him, especially when his maneuvers may actually undermine his goals.
