I have decided not to vote

This letter is a personal statement. I don't represent anyone, nor do I intend to influence other readers. This letter mirrors my feelings as an Indonesian citizen who is facing a difficult political situation. Especially, in connection with the election of people who intend to represent the people.

Since I do not know where to channel my feelings, I think your letter's page will serve my purpose.

I am a real Indonesian, I am Catholic and I am not a member of the civil corps.

As a non-Moslem, it would be difficult for me to vote for the United Development Party (PPP). I think that PPP clearly represents Islam and I fear the party will not take into account my aspirations.

Golkar is a functional group with clearly defined programs, although I do not agree with all of them and its Regular Candidates List has many unknown names to me. For instance, it listed a dangdut singer, a film star, and even ministers' wives.

Excuse me, I do not intend to belittle them, but I haven't heard about their political achievements. How can I convince myself to choose people when there are still question marks over their achievements.

The Indonesian Democratic Party seems the most interesting party. But recent developments have left an unpleasant aftertaste in my mouth, especially the violent unseating of Megawati. How do this party's leaders expect to represent "the small man." Surely, not in this way?

These simple considerations have left me utterly confused. But, since there is going to be no change until the coming election, I have decided to be a non-voter.

Please, note that I do not want to be a non-voter, but circumstances have forced me to become one.
