Hurricane hits West Aceh

BANDA ACEH, Aceh: Dozens of buildings in the districts of Seunagan and Teunom, West Aceh, were destroyed and dozens of people injured when hurricanes hit the area on Thursday and Friday.

Antara quoted head of the local social service office H.M. Saleh Yakoeb as saying on Saturday that the hurricanes lasted for half an hour each time. "Some people here call the disasters a 'minor doomsday'," he said.

About 100 residents fled the two districts. Some of those who were injured are still being treated at local hospitals.

The West Aceh regency is known for its flooding and tidal waves.

The authorities are still quantifying the financial loss caused by the disasters, while promising to send food supplies. (swe)
