Humanity above all

It might be a little late but, then again, it's never too late for one to show his or her sympathy and respect to others. I'd like to express my sympathy to Gen. Wiranto, who has gracefully responded to President Abdurrahman Wahid's final decision by stepping down wisely from his post as coordinating minister for political affairs and security.

By coming to a wise solution in the end, both President Abdurrahman and Gen. Wiranto have shown that they are true gentlemen in the political arena. They were not influenced by the misleading protests nor predictions created by the political elites as well as political analysts. I suppose they deserve big credit for this.

There is no doubt that the separation of East Timor from the Republic of Indonesia has inflicted a deep wound on all Indonesians, including President Abdurrahman, Gen. Wiranto and especially the Indonesian Military. I'm glad, however, that President Abdurrahman and Gen. Wiranto are willing to show the world that their integrity toward humanity is above their love to their nation.

Allow me to quote Moliere, "Birth is nothing where virtue is not". I'm sure that both gentlemen are truly aware of this. And may they both maintain their good personal relationship despite all the political maneuvering they may have to face. Thus, together with all the Indonesian people, they will build the unity of the nation.
