Human rights postgrad school opens

JAKARTA: In a bid to improve understanding of human rights and democracy in a practical sense, the Jakarta-based Pelita Harapan University launched on Monday a postgraduate program on human rights.

"Hopefully we can contribute our ideas to the wider world and carry out analysis and comparison on human rights and democracy as universal values," chairman of the university's board of advisers to the rector, Willi Toisuta, said.

The first class will begin next year. Indonesia is the second country to open the program after Thailand.

At the launch ceremony, Minister of Justice and Human Rights Yusril Ihza Mahendra invited other universities to participate in the effort to enhance people's awareness of the protection and promotion of human rights. -- JP
