Human Rights Day marked in Maumere
MAUMERE, East Nusa Tenggara: Some 1,300 people marched in a silent parade marking International Human Rights Day on Sunday.
The group, consisting of local residents, priests, nuns, students and activists, joined a celebration at the Theresia Avila hall, around one kilometer from the Samador soccer field in downtown Maumere.
Representatives from the Hindu, Catholic, Protestant, Muslim and Buddhist religions spread a message of peace and concern over widespread human rights violations through speeches, singing and theatrical performances.
"We hope this celebration will heighten awareness among the people and stop the practice of violence," a coordinator said at the ceremony. (yac/edt)
