Huge aftershocks jolt Bengkulu

BENGKULU, Bengkulu: Powerful aftershocks shook this quake- ridden town on Wednesday, but no fatalities or damages were reported.

The first tremor, measuring 5.4 on the Richter scale, was felt in the wee hours while residents were still asleep. The other quake, with a magnitude of 5.1, took place later in the afternoon.

A local meteorology and geophysics official, Ponito, told Antara the epicenter of the shocks was located at the 5.35 south latitude and 101.55 east longitude at a depth of 33 kilometers.

Bengkulu was rocked by a big quake measuring 7.3 on the Richter scale on June 5, leaving 85 people killed, hundreds injured and thousands homeless. (lup)
