Housewives protest over brothels

WAMENA, Irian Jaya: Hundreds of housewives from the United Women's Organization took to the streets here on Monday to complain about brothels in their neighborhood.

The housewives went round the small town during the morning to locations which were believed to be prostitution dens.

"But we did not meet a single person," Merry Muabuay, who heads the organization, said, as quoted by Antara.

"They've probably evacuated to another location," she added.

The housewives then unfurled large banners and marched to the local council building.

A woman from the local Dani tribe, Lince Kogoya, claimed that such illicit practices have caused unrest at many homes, causing a high number of failed marriages.
