Housewife reports doctor to police

JAKARTA: A 44-year-old housewife, Ngatmi, filed a malpractice complaint with the Jakarta Police on Tuesday against a doctor at a hospital in East Jakarta.

Ngatmi was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2001 and the doctor removed her right breast in August of that year.

"Her right arm became lame and began swelling about three months ago ... it now as large as her thigh. The surgery scar also began to open and ooze blood and pus," Ngatmi's husband, Naimin, 46, said.

The mother of two went back to the doctor who performed the surgery as soon as the complications began, but her condition has failed to improve.

Naimin said they were not seeking money from the hospital but simply "wanted the hospital to take serious action to treat Ngatmi's illness". -- JP
