Housewife hangs herself in closet

JAKARTA (JP): A housewife hanged herself in a cupboard in South Jakarta on Wednesday, apparently after hearing reports that her second husband wanted to marry a daughter from her first marriage.

The woman, identified as Sutini, 45, was found by her son Purwoko, 19, on the second floor of their house on Jl. Pluis in Grogol Utara subdistrict.

A police officer who asked not to be named said that Sutini's daughter Iis, 17, whom her husband, Mar, planned to wed, was not at home when the incident happened.

"Mar was reportedly visiting relatives in Central Java," the officer said.

Purwoko, who looked depressed, refused to talk to reporters. He only said that he found his mother lying in a closet when he opened it to change his clothes.

"I was about to inform her that I was going out ... but I just found her dead."

"Based on information gathered from witnesses, we believe that the report of Mar planning to marry Iis deeply shocked her," he said.

The case is being handled by officers of the Kebayoran Lama police precinct. (edt)
