Houses to face the water

BANDAR LAMPUNG, Lampung: Soon city residents living near rivers or the sea will have to build their houses facing the water, Antara quoted an official as saying here Saturday.

Vice Governor Suwardi Ramli said the provincial administration, especially the municipality, had been thinking about issuing such a decree to protect the environment.

"People whose houses face the river will help make sure that it remains clean. If the river is at the back of your house, you will tend to dump anything filthy into it," Suwardi said.

He explained that this is expected to help the province maintain a certain standard of cleanliness because in the future, the Adipura annual award for clean cities will be awarded only if the rivers and beaches are as clean as the roads.

He concluded with a call to housewives and servants not to dump garbage in the river. (swe)
