NUSA DUA, Bali (JP): The House of Representatives came under fire for failing to have a delegation present at an important session of the international anti-corruption conference especially for lawmakers on Wednesday.
Two legislators, Markus Silano and Sidharto Danubroto, are representing the House at the five-day conference of the States Parties to the United Nations Convention Against Corruption (UNCAC), which opened Monday at the Bali International ConventionCenter in Nusa Dua.
They should have been present at an important forum for parliamentarians discussing the strategic role of lawmakers in combating corruption.
The absence of the two lawmakers raised questions from other Indonesian delegates about the depth of the commitment of the country's legislative branch in the fight against corruption in the country.
Legal expert Mas Achmad Santosa, who attended the Wednesday forum, lamented the absence of the two legislators, saying it showed a lack of serious commitment on the part of the House, who ought to be addressing graft within its own organization andother state agencies.
"How would they know about the latest progress on the international efforts in battling corruption if they did not attend this forum," he told reporters on the sidelines of the discussion. (dic/nfk/**)
