House urged to act on land problems

JAKARTA: Some 80 legislators submitted a petition to the House of Representatives on Monday urging the body to exercise its right of inquiry into national land problems.

The legislators said the country's land problems were too difficult to be resolved by the courts alone.

"The House has to find a breakthrough to help resolve the issue," legislator Asnawi Latief of the Ummat Sovereignty faction said.

"When land cases are brought to court, many of the court decisions fail to uphold justice and thus are ineffectual in resolving the cases," according to the petition.

If the House decides to exercise its right of inquiry, the government will be called before a plenary session of the body to explain problems related to land issues in the country. --JP
