House to choose BI deputy governors next month

JAKARTA (JP): The House of Representatives will choose new deputy governors for Bank Indonesia in the second week of October, ending the vacuum which has left the three positions empty since early this year.

Vice chairman of House Commission IX for financial and development planning affairs Paskah Suzetta said on Thursday that the House would choose three names from the nine names proposed by the central bank.

"We need to take swift action, if the positions are kept vacant then the board of governors' decision would be invalid because a quorum would not be possible," he explained to reporters after an internal meeting of the commission.

The names proposed to replace former deputy governor Achwan are Bachri Ansjori currently the director for BI's internal supervision, Djakaria currently BI's representative in Tokyo and Maulana Ibrahim currently second director for BI's bank supervision unit.

Recommended to replace Dono Iskandar as deputy governor are Aslim Tadjudin presently the director of BI's monetary processing, Hartadi A. Sarwono currently director of the bank's economic research and monetary policy division and Maman Somantri the director for research and banking regulations division.

Bun Bunan Hutapea director for internal finances, Made Sukada director for foreign exchange processing and Siti Ch. Fadjriah first director for BI's bank overseer division, are recommended to replace Burhanuddin Abdullah.

"We will ask all candidates to present their proposed work program to the commission and hopefully we will be able to appraise their competency and choose from among them," Paskah said, explaining that the commission's choices would be forwarded to the House's plenary meeting where a formal decision would be made.

The positions have been left vacant since late last year.

Paskah also said that the House would also ask BI to explain the status of senior deputy governor Anwar Nasution and deputy governor Miranda Goeltom who had tendered their resignations last year.

"Since they already submitted their resignation letters, there should be a reelection for the positions," he said, explaining that the candidates for senior deputy governor could only be proposed by the President.(tnt)
