House to back terrorism regulation

JAKARTA: The nine factions in the House of Representatives (DPR) are likely to accept the implementation of the government regulation in lieu of a terrorism law at a plenary session on March 6.

The session will hear the stance of House factions on the government regulation, which many consider to have some repressive articles.

Both House Speaker Akbar Tandjung and House deputy speaker Tosari Widjaja said on Tuesday that some factions had warned the government of possible criticism should it take draconian measures.

The government issued the regulation to deal with the impact of the Oct. 12 Bali bombings and terrorism in general.

Currently, a House committee is deliberating the draft law on terrorism, which is expected to supercede the government regulation in lieu of law. - JP
