House members visit Kalimantan

PALANGKA RAYA, Central Kalimantan: Visiting members of the House of Representatives urged the local government yesterday to make sure that all foreigners working in the area do so legally.

They said that as Indonesia's largest wood producer, Central Kalimantan is a paradise for foreigners seeking employment, legally or otherwise.

Led by legislator S. Soehardi, the House members are from Commission III for law.

Chief of the provincial office of the justice ministry, Amirul, reported that he faces difficulty in supervising the legal status of foreigners working in the forestry sector because most of them stay in the forests.

Soehardi questioned the governor's closure of an immigration post in Kapuas regency four years ago.

When visiting Palangka Raya Prison, the House members were also dismayed to find that the jail was overcrowded, Antara reported. (pan)
