House attacked after flag removed

JAKARTA (JP): A mob pelted stones at a house belonging to the head of Gintung village in Mauk district in Tangerang late Tuesday after its owner tore down a Golkar flag hoisted near the residence, a police officer said.

City police spokesman Lt. Col. Zainuri Lubis identified the house owner on Wednesday as Asep Nawawi, 40.

"Earlier in the afternoon Asep tore down a Golkar flag which had been hoisted in front of his house," Lubis said, referring to the ruling party.

No details were available about why Asep tore down the flag.

A few hours later a group of at least 20 young men marched to Asep's house and asked him to explain why he tore down the flag.

When Asep tried to contact security personnel at about 10:30 p.m., the mob stoned the house, causing damage to the roof and windows.

After damaging the house, the mob reportedly dispersed peacefully.

Lubis said no arrests were made in the attack and the case was being investigated by the police. (emf)
