Hotel Majapahit reopens
JAKARTA (JP): The historic Hotel Majapahit in Surabaya, East
Java, officially reopens today after a US$35 million, two-and-a-
half-year renovation.
The hotel, now called Hotel Majapahit Mandarin Oriental
Surabaya, is managed by the Hong Kong-based hotel management
chain, Mandarin Oriental.
The hotel, built in 1910, will be reintroduced by Minister of
Tourism, Post and Telecommunications Joop Ave, who will also be
celebrating his 62nd birthday.
The 150-room hotel, now 75 percent owned by PT Sekar Group and
25 percent by Mandarin, is located on Jl. Tunjungan in the center
of Surabaya.
Majapahit Mandarin Oriental Surabaya is the second hotel
managed by Mandarin in Indonesia after the Mandarin Oriental
Jakarta. The group also manages other hotels in Bangkok, Hong
Kong, Macau, Manila, San Francisco and Singapore.
Besides the Mandarin, Surabaya already has at least seven
international deluxe hotel chains in operation, including
Sheraton, Radisson, Novotel, Shangri-La, Hyatt, Westin and
