Horse carts vs pedicabs

PALU, Central Sulawesi: At least 400 horse cart drivers have staged a protest in front of the provincial council building, demanding the administration ban mass operation of becak (pedicab) in the capital.

"The operation of massive pedicabs has made it hard for us to earn a living," said Surya Sunarya, coordinator of the protesters and chairman of Traditional Public Transportation here.

He said that previously there were only 500 pedicabs and now they have increased three fold.

"Now from 700 horse carts, there are only 300 left," he said.

The horse cart drivers ended up marching their way along major streets here such as Jl. Moh. Hatta, Jl. Mohammad Yamin, and Jl. Jend. Sudirman, leaving horse manure everywhere. (24/edt)
