Hoodlum killed by mob

JAKARTA (JP): A known hoodlum who operated in the Jatiuwung district in Tangerang was mobbed to death by angry residents on late Tuesday, a police officer said.

Also on Tuesday, at around 9 p.m., a man was attacked by four unidentified assailants in nearby Mauk district after he accidentally stepped on the foot of one of the assailants, city police spokesman Lt. Col. Zainuri Lubis said on Wednesday.

The dead man was identified as 31-year-old Endang, while the man who was attacked in Mauk was identified as 18-year-old Cici Sanusi, a resident of Kemiri subdistrict.

Lubis said local police had made no arrests in either case, but investigations currently were underway.

Police said that based on information from residents of Jatiuwung, Endang was well-known as a hoodlum and it was believed he was drunk at the time he was mobbed.

"Endang was seen quarreling with a resident in a food stall. The cause of the argument is unknown. Witnesses to the quarrel became involved when the two got into a physical fight," Lubis said.

The mob stopped beating the victim and dispersed only after Endang was motionless. Police later came and picked up Endang's body, which showed severe wounds to the head and chest.

In Mauk, Cici was leaving a nightspot when he walked passed four men, accidentally stepping on one of the men's foot.

"The man got angry and asked Cici for an apology. However, when Cici said he was sorry, the man thought Cici didn't mean it," Lubis said.

The man's friends hit Cici and one of them stabbed the victim in the shoulder and thigh.

The four fled after the victim collapsed. (emf)
