Homemade guns cause headache

BANDAR LAMPUNG: The police are investigating reports that guns often used by criminals are homemade and produced locally.

Chief of the local branch of the internal security agency, Col. A Sanusi, said the authorities believe southern Sumatra is a major illicit producer of the guns.

Police in the northern Lampung subdistrict of Mesuji seized the rudimentary firearms from local residents who used them for hunting.

On July 27, police arrested eight people and seized two homemade guns, 12 bullets and a bottle of explosive powder in Mesuji, Sanusi said as reported by Antara.

Sanusi called on the locals to report on the production of the guns to the authorities, who have so far been unsuccessful in tracking the makers down. (pan)
