Holidaymakers pelt train

TEGAL, Central Java: At least 300 people waiting at the local railway station ran amok on Monday after being incorrectly informed by a station official that a train heading for Jakarta would not stop in Tegal.

The mob, mostly people returning to Jakarta after the Idul Fitri holiday, stoned a passing Tegalarum train plying the Pekalongan-Jakarta route via Tegal, damaging some windows of the train.

They were enraged because they believed there were no more cars available for them to go to Jakarta.

Chief of Banyumas Military Command Col. Haryadi Sutanto said two women were slightly injured in the incident.

The information that the Tegalarum train would not stop at Tegal station and that the people could not return to Jakarta was wrong, but it was correct that the train was carrying more than 5,000 people from Pekalongan, Haryadi said.

"Now everything is under control and all the passengers are on board. We made 25 buses available for the Idul Fitri revelers. Nothing to worry about. Everybody can go back to business in Jakarta," Haryadi said.

Some of the people were transported by bus. (45)
