History repeated in Congo
History is repeating itself in Congo. Just like his predecessor Mobutu Sese Seko, President Laurent Kabila is confronted with a Tutsi rebellion which started in the east and has spread quickly. And just like Mobutu, Kabila has been accused of nepotism and corruption by the rebels.
The revolt against Kabila came not unexpectedly. The strongman in whom the United States, South Africa and the regional leaders have put their hope has turned out to be a dictator. The promised democratic reforms have failed to take place. Dissidents and critical journalists are arrested and human rights organizations forbidden.
