World No. 1 Lleyton Hewitt, of Australia, earned revenge for a loss eight months ago, dismissing Spain's Alberto Martin 6-3, 7-5 to reach the third round of the US$800,000 ATP tournament here on Wednesday.
Top seed Hewitt was still smarting from a first-round defeat suffered at the Australian Open when he was ill with the chicken pox.
Hewitt had just lost to another Spaniard, Carlos Moya, in the final at the Cincinnati Masters on Sunday.
Hard-serving 18-year-old Croatian teen Mario Ancic surprised No. 4 seed Yevgeny Kafelnikov of Russia, 4-6, 6-2, 6-4, to advance to the third round.
It was the second win over a top-10 player in two months for Ancic, who is drawing comparisons to countryman Goran Ivanisevic. In June, he upset Switzerland's Roger Federer in the first round at Wimbledon.
Hewitt will meet one of the game's big hitters, Briton Greg Rusedski scheduled for late Thursday.
Rusedski, the 14th seed, stopped Frenchman Lionel Roux 6-3, 6- 2, saying he was pleased with his preparation for the U.S. Open after kicking off last week with an upset of world No. 2 Marat Safin in Cincinnati. Safin was forced to pull out of the tournament with a viral respiratory problem, which has kept him bedridden since the weekend.
Spain's Felix Mantilla eliminated seventh seed Younes El Aynaoui 7-6 (7/2), 7-5.
In Washington, second seed Andy Roddick opened the defense of his Legg Mason Classic title with a second round 6-2 6-2 victory over fellow American Justin Gimelstob on Wednesday.
The 25-year-old qualifier Gimelstob, who was granted a wild card for the US Open earlier on Wednesday, was no match for the 19-year-old Roddick who said he was now more relaxed after paying too much attention to what was going on around him.
Sweden's Thomas Enqvist overcame American qualifier Michael Russell after winning a grueling first-set tiebreaker, 15-13.
Enqvist, the seventh seed then ran away with the second set 6- 0 to avenge the Stella Artois defeat to Russell on grass earlier this year.
Jarkko Nieminen of Finland ended the tournament of Canadian qualifier Frank Dancevic, who recorded his first career victory on the ATP Tour in a tough three-set win over Russian Nikolay Davydenko on Tuesday, with a 7-5 6-0 victory.
Thailand's Paradorn Srichaphan, who beat Agassi at Wimbledon earlier this year, beat American Kevin Kim 7-6 6-1 and will now face third seed Sjeng Schalken of the Netherlands, who lost the final last year to Roddick in the third round.
In women tennis, third seed Jelena Dokic advanced to the third round of the WTA Montreal tournament with a 6-3 6-4 win on Wednesday over unseeded Slovakian Martina Sucha.
No. 4 seed Kim Clijsters, of Belgium, also got past Nicole Pratt, of Austria, 6-4, 3-6, 6-1 at the 1.2 million dollar hard- court event.
Jennifer Capriati, the second seed, beat fellow American qualifier Sarah Taylor 6-4, 6-1, but unseeded Russian Anna Kournikova was not as fortunate in her 7-5, 6-1 setback against Spaniard Virginia Ruano Pascual.
Kournikova and Ruano Pascual were forced to wait out a rain delay, with the Spaniard leading 5-1 in the second set.
