Heavy truck policy enriches city

TANGERANG: With a strict policy enforced since June on cargo trucks passing Cikande weighing station in Banten province, the administration is now enjoying three times the earnings from fines imposed on overweight trucks.

The administration revealed on Thursday that the earnings had increased from the previous Rp 3 million to Rp 4 million, to Rp 12 million to Rp 14.5 million per month.

Data from the Cikande weighing station shows that in May the fines collected stood at Rp 5.064 million. In June, the earnings reached Rp 12.4 million while in July they reached Rp 14.6 million.

"This is because of the hard work of officials in ticketing drivers who violate the weight limit," said Dadang, head of the transportation control division at the Banten transportation agency.

Ideally, he added, overweight trucks needed to unload some of their cargo before leaving the weighing station to maintain a good condition on the roads.

"Unfortunately, we don't have warehouse facilities to store the goods. Therefore, what we can do now is to fine the violators and give them a ticket for settlement in court." --Antara
