Hasyim visits police, AGO

JAKARTA: Megawati Soekarnoputri's running mate Hasyim Muzadi visited National Police Chief Gen. Da'i Bachtiar and Attorney General MA Rachman on Monday to discuss law enforcement.

Hasyim said he met the two high-ranking state officials to provide suggestions on how to cope with basic problems that hamper law enforcement in the country, notably corruption, illegal logging, drug trafficking and the smuggling of goods.

"We have a similar view that a poor legal system and low police salaries are the root of our weak law enforcement," said Hasyim.

It was unclear in what capacity he held talks with Da'i and Rachman. Before being declared nonactive as Nahdlatul Ulama chairman, Hasyim signed up to a national campaign against corruption with Muhammadiyah chairman Ahmad Syafii Maarif. --JP
