Harbor services

As a student returning from my studies abroad I didn't pay much attention to the news concerning the rise in tariffs for harbor services -- until I had to get my personal belongings out of the Tanjung Priok port.

Apart from the fact that most of the money will be needed to upkeep the infrastructure needed to get to the different offices and to offset any increase in the price of paper, I would like to propose a couple of areas where the money could also be spent.

In the first place, some of it could be used to get rid of all the people hanging around the hangars who expect money for just looking at you.

In the second place, it could used to finance a reeducation program aimed at the lower echelons of the work force to make sure that they understand that they can't just make up laws as they go along in order to break them for something in return.

Finally, I hope that in order to make the harbors more efficient and customer friendly the authorities will not engage the services of expensive foreign consultants.

We have enough government services which are very efficient and have a minimum paperwork requirement. I took me only 10 minutes to get my KTP (residential card), 15 minutes to extend my passport, and about half an hour to pay the road tax for our car. All of these with a minimum requirement on official documents
