Halimah proposed as W. Sumatra governor

PADANG, West Sumatra: Halimah Bambang Trihatmojo, a daughter- in-law of President Soeharto, was named as a possible candidate for West Sumatra governor yesterday.

Her name was one of five proposed by the regional branch of the Kosgoro youth movement, to replace Governor Hasan Basri Durin whose term ends later this year.

As reported by Antara, one of her strongest credentials is the fact that Halimah's parents hail from the province. She is also known for her activities as head of the National Foster Parents Movement.

The other names forwarded were Sabri Zakaria, head of the public works office in the province; Syahrul Udjud, an assistant to the coordinating minister for people's welfare; Zainal Bakar of the local administrative office, and Muchlis Ibrahim the current deputy governor. (mds)
