Habibie's ex-adjutant new city garrison chief of staff

JAKARTA (JP): Jakarta Military Commander Maj. Gen. Djadja Suparman installed on Tuesday former president B.J. Habibie's adjutant Col. Hasanuddin as the new chief of staff of the Jakarta Garrison.

Hasanuddin replaced Brig. Gen. Albert Inkiriwang, a 1972 graduate of the National Military Academy, in a modest handover ceremony at the garrison headquarters in Gambir subdistrict, Central Jakarta.

Inkiriwang, 50, will soon assume a new post as deputy to the Army chief's assistant for territorial affairs.

In his speech, Djadja stressed the importance of restoring order and discipline among the city's soldiers.

"Discipline among the soldiers is deteriorating. The newly appointed garrison commander should therefore put into priority the enforcement of the law and discipline within its supervision," he said at the ceremony.

Spokesman to the city military command Lt. Col. D.J. Nachrowi separately said the garrison had responsibilities which included promoting the establishment of law and discipline among soldiers.

"The garrison is also responsible for protecting very important persons of the country, in cooperation with among others, the city police and the presidential security guard corps," he said.

The garrison, whose members are from all three Indonesian Military (TNI) forces -- the Army, the Navy and the Air Force -- as well as the National Police, will also cooperate with the city military police in upholding law enforcement and discipline among the soldiers, said Nachrowi.

There are 11 military garrisons throughout the country attached to their respective 11 military commands. (asa)
