Gus Dur is the right leader

I should have written this letter a month ago when Abdurrahman Wahid, popularly known as Gus Dur, was elected the fourth Indonesian president. However, it's never too late, I suppose, to express one's admiration to someone who is great and honorable in personalities and thoughts.

I know Gus Dur through his writings as well as the media that covers every single statement and gesture of his. I respect him. In fact I admire him. His ideas and philosophies are simple and practical yet deep and remarkable. He is wise and intelligent, sharp and witty, spontaneous and has a great sense of humor. He is also tactful and flexible.

Indonesia is fortunate to have a leader like Gus Dur in this crucial situation. I don't think there is a better man than him at this moment to embrace such diverse people in Indonesia. He is a moderate Muslim and a peace-lover. I couldn't have agreed more when Newsweek dubbed him as an Indonesian holy man and a saint.

His controversial decisions concerning the closing down of the Ministry of Information and Ministry of Social Affairs, and his intention to set up economic ties with Israel have aroused a great deal of protest. However, I see it as an indication of Gus Dur's tremendous courage to swim against the current. He has a clear mind and a great vision. I believe that his sensitivity and passion for humanity will always lead him to whatever is best for the people and the country.

Problems of disintegration are currently most urgent and need to be taken care of with great attention and consideration. Let's hope things go for the best and such things as a Balkanization or post-Soviet-type split won't happen to Indonesia.
