Gus Dur has birthday at RSCM

JAKARTA: Former president Abdurrahman "Gus Dur" Wahid will celebrate on Monday his 63rd birthday in his room at Cipto Mangunkusumo general hospital, Central Jakarta, where he is being treated for high blood pressure.

Gus Dur's spokesman Adhi Massardi said on Sunday that after celebrating his birthday, Gus Dur would likely be allowed to leave the hospital, as his health was improving.

"I cannot confirm who will attend the birthday celebration and what the agenda will be ... but it might be a small selamatan (thanksgiving)," Adhi told Antara.

Gus Dur, who has suffered at least two strokes, was rushed to the hospital on Friday due to unstable blood pressure.

"If his condition continues to improve, he may be allowed to leave the hospital after the birthday celebration, to rest at home," Adhi said. -- Antara
