Gunshot victim files complaint

JAKARTA: A bystander who was accidentally shot by police while they were trying to quell a brawl, Yuli Anggraeni, 14, filed a complaint against the Jakarta Police on Thursday.

Accompanied by her lawyers from the Indonesia Legal Aid and Human Rights Association (PBHI), Basir Bahuga and David Sitorus, Yuli gave her clarification about the incident to the police.

A police officer accidentally shot Yuli in the side of the mouth, when the officer was trying to break up a student brawl at Jl. Gebas, Ciracas, in East Jakarta on March 14.

Yuli was hospitalized for 18 days and underwent minor surgery to remove the bullet from her jaw. She lost five upper teeth and two lower ones.

"Seemingly, the Jakarta Police are reluctant to deal with the case as they have been slow to respond," David told journalists.

The lawyers noted that they were waiting for the result of a projectile test done by the National Police Central Forensics Laboratory.

Meanwhile, Jakarta Police chief Insp. Gen. Makbul Padmanagara remarked that it would take time to investigate the case.--JP
