Guess What? Heidi Awuy

Harp lovers in Indonesia will be happy to hear there will be a new generation of harpists in the future.

That is in large part thanks to harpist Heidi Awuy, who is teaching the instrument to five people ranging in age from 5 to 50 at her Bina Bakat Belia music school in South Jakarta.

The mother of four admitted it was not easy to build people's interest in the harp because of the instrument's scarcity in the country.

"I have three harps at home, all of them are used for the teaching," she said, adding that one of her children also played the harp.

So far, Heidi said, there are only three professional harpists in Indonesia. "The condition is actually better compared to neighboring countries like Malaysia and Singapore," she added.

Her music school is not a special school for the harp. "We also teach other instruments like piano, trumpet, recorder and guitar," she said during the launch of the book Reformasi dalam Penegakan Hukum (Reform in Law Enforcement) by Antonius Sujata at the National Archives Building in Central Jakarta last week.(ind)
