Guess What? Alya Rohali

If you are one of those dying to see Alya Rohali sing as a professional singer, you are certain to be disappointed.

"I enjoy both my jobs as a TV presenter and as a sinetron (TV soap opera) actress. I have never wanted to be a singer because I have neither talent nor a good voice," she said.

Rohali started her career as a star in television advertising in 1993 when she was a Senior High School student and a promising newcomer in the 1994 Miss Jakarta contest. The 25-year-old is now a familiar face as a TV host, ad star and sinetron star.

She won the 1996 Puteri Indonesia (Indonesian Pageant), and her participation in the Miss Universe contest in Las Vegas in the same year became the subject of a long, drawn out controversy because the government did not sanction it.

"I like being a presenter because it keeps me well-informed. My knowledge is improving day by day. I like my other profession as a sinetron actress. I am proud because I can play the role of various people with a different character."

Being a TV presenter and actress was, in fact, not her childhood ideal.

"When I was a child I wanted to be a law expert. The inspiration came from my mother who studied law at Padjadjaran University (in Bandung), but she dropped out."

"I dreamed of becoming a TV actress after I was inspired by a TVRI drama in the 1980s." (Mohammad Yazid)
