Guard stabbed while defending bonuses

TANGERANG (JP): A security guard at footwear manufacturer PT Starwin in the Cikupa district here was seriously injured after being attacked by six armed robbers in the early hours of Saturday.

Sugeng's live was saved by security guards from nearby factories who rushed to his aid after hearing his screams.

When the security guards arrived on the scene the robbers fled in different directions.

The security guards immediately reported the incident to the local police, who were able to apprehend four of the suspected robbers a few hours later.

According to Sugeng, he saw the six robbers, armed with machetes and crowbars, break into the factory's office at about 1 a.m. and attempt to unlock a safe which contained Rp 2.5 billion.

The money was the Idul Fitri bonus for the company's employees and was to be paid out on Saturday afternoon.

Realizing that they had been spotted, the robbers attacked Sugeng. The security guard suffered serious stab wounds to several parts of his body.

Police said that one the robbers, the alleged mastermind, was an employee of the company.

The case is still being investigated by the police. Sugeng is being treated for his wounds at Cipto Mangunkusumo General Hospital in Jakarta. (bsr/41)
