Guard shoots, mob burns warehouse

BOGOR: Three hundred people attacked and burned a warehouse in the PT Indocement Tunggal Prakarsa compound in Gunung Putri, Bogor, after they learned that a local youth had been shot dead by a security guard of the company on Friday at 11:30 p.m.

The Bogot Police managed to restore peace 45 minutes after the incident began by deploying 200 officers.

The 36-year-old guard, Ali Rahman, has admitted that he shot Handi, a 20-year-old resident of Citeureup village, whose body then fell into Cileungsi River. Ali said he had suspected the youth of stealing from the warehouse.

Villagers found Handi's body on Saturday at 5:30 p.m.

"It is the second shooting by Indocement security guards. Last year, they shot Sandy in the right hand. He didn't die but his right hand was totally paralyzed," said a villager, Anwar.

Bogor Police chief Adj. Sr. Comr. M. Taufik said that Ali had been taken into custody and his American-made Musbrek H-741212 gun seized as evidence.

"Ali made the mistake of shooting without giving a warning shot," he said. -- JP
