Groups clash during hearing

MEDAN, North Sumatera: Dozens of members of two opposing groups clashed on Monday near the local Provincial Prosecutor's Office during the questioning of six Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI Perjuangan) legislators who stand accused of bribery.

A man was injured during the clash and was rushed to the local hospital.

A group of youths wearing the party's civilian guard uniform turned up for the questioning to support the legislators, who are accused of taking bribes in exchange for their vote for Abdillah, the eventual winner of the mayoral election last month.

Abdillah was sworn in last week despite the fact that he was also under police investigation.

While the civilian guards were holding a rally in support of the legislators, a group of party supporters came to demand the resignation of Abdillah and the six legislators.

The demonstration of the rival groups turned violent after both sides resorted to throwing stones and plastic bottles. (08/39)
