Grand painting exhibit slated for October
JAKARTA (JP): A grand painting exhibition will take place at
the Shangri-La Hotel in Central Jakarta in October to delight
local art lovers.
The exhibition, which will run from Oct. 18 to 23 and is
scheduled to be opened by First Lady Tien Soeharto, will display
500 paintings by noted painters the world over, including
masterpieces by Pablo Picasso, Salvador Dali, Paul Cezanne, Edgar
Degas, Henri Matisse, Paul Gaugin and Marc Chagall.
Apart from works by international painters, the exhibition,
called The Jakarta International Fine Arts Exhibition, will also
showcase rare paintings by prominent Indonesian artists such as
Raden Saleh, Basuki Abdullah, Affandi, Mochtar Apin and S.
Sudjojono.
Sanyoto Sastrowardoyo, chairperson of Yayasan Seni Rupa
Indonesia (the Indonesian Fine Arts Foundation) which will
organize the event, said in a press meeting yesterday: "The main
purpose of the coming exhibition is to increase the appreciation
of art lovers in Indonesia."
Because only a small number of Indonesian people have seen
world's masterpieces, the coming exhibition is a rare event, she
said.
The event is jointly organized by the foundation and the
London-based Bradbury Company, one of the largest companies which
organizes international art galleries.
Siti Hediyati (Titik) Prabowo, another organizer of the
exhibition, added that the foundation will borrow rare paintings
of Indonesian painters from the Istana Negara (the National
Palace) and local collectors for use at the exhibition.
Painting bourses, discussions and workshops will accompany the
gala event.
Local artists will have the opportunity to win the Philip
Morris Award.
Indonesian artists are invited to take part in the competition
and are allowed to submit their newest and most original works to
the foundation's office on Jl. Taman Anggrek No. S 15 A, Slipi,
West Jakarta, by Sept. 10.
"Up to the present, we have received more than 400 photographs
of paintings to be included in the competition, " Titik said.
