Grace period for GAM

The government's period of grace to the separatist Free Aceh Movement (GAM) until the fasting month of Ramadhan in December to decide whether or not GAM will continue dialogs within the framework of special autonomy to end the armed conflict, should get a response from GAM to formulate a peaceful settlement.

The policy is meant to thoroughly resolve the problem of Nanggroe Aceh Darussalam through consultations and collective efforts to prevent the loss of more innocent lives. The government has sought many solutions through dialogs but GAM has carried on its terrorism and public deception.

The regional administration has also strived to rebuild educational facilities repeatedly destroyed by GAM, which has brought schooling to a halt and spread fear among students.

As a citizen of Aceh, I have great concern over the persistent violence there, as the people crave peace and order, which is impossible unless both sides are willing to achieve a settlement that has been delayed for such a long time.

Special autonomy is basically a fairly effective key to a comprehensive solution to this issue, and the several months ahead should be an opportunity to create a peaceful atmosphere in Aceh instead of the conflict.

However, if GAM goes on with its terrorism against the Acehnese and only thinks of its interests, civilians' suffering and sacrifice will continue to increase.
