GPRS feature charges

Indosat Multimedia Mobile (IM3), a new GSM operator, makes the right move not to charge its subscribers for using the General Packet Radio System (GPRS) feature, at least for the moment. It is supposed to apply charges starting May 2002.

GPRS is a feature to access data through mobile phones. We all know that the content is limited due to limited content providers. Not many companies want to play in this narrow market. Consequently, only a few use the feature although it is free, not to mention the slow speed in accessing. I wonder why any subscriber would use it if IM3 applies the charges.

Years ago Wireless Application Protocol (WAP) also failed to attract subscribers and basically WAP and GPRS are not that different, although GPRS is supposed to be faster.

I am pessimistic that GPRS can be a success. Other GSM operators should wisely consider offering this service and see if it is feasible compared to the money invested. Until now, only IM3 offers this service and I hear that Excelkomindo and Telkomsel are to follow suit.
