Govt waits for Hidayat's complaint

JAKARTA: The government is waiting for an official statement from Hidayat Nur Wahid, leader of the Islamic foundation Al Hairiman Al Khariyah, before it files a complaint with the United Nations Security Council for including the foundation on the list of terrorists linked to al-Qaeda.

"In the case of a formal complaint and a credible explanation to prove that an organization does not have any connection with al-Qaeda, there is a chance for its exclusion from the list," Minister of Foreign Affairs Hassan Wirayuda said on Tuesday.

Al Hairiman Al Khariyah is on the UN's latest list of foundations connected to the al-Qaeda terrorist network. The UN has demanded member countries to freeze the assets of the listed organizations.

Hidayat, who also chairs the Prosperous Justice Party (PKS), has threatened to sue the UN for its decision. -- JP
