Govt to recruit new civil servants

JAKARTA: The government has decided to appoint more than 650,000 contract workers as civil servants over the next three months, including some 236,000 teachers.

The decision was taken on Friday during a limited coordination meeting at the vice presidential office, which was attended by Minister of National Education Bambang Sudibyo and State Minister of Administrative Reforms Taufik Effendy.

"A total of 650,000 people will be formally appointed as civil servants over the next three years," Taufik told reporters after the meeting.

Next year, he said, the government planned to recruit some 300,000 new civil servants. However, this figure would only include 100,000 non-contract workers.

An estimated 200,000 civil servants retire every year. --JP
