Govt to improve bureaucracy

JAKARTA: In response to President Megawati Soekarnoputri's remarks on the poor quality of bureaucrats, the Minister of Administrative Reforms office is currently in the process of drafting a new working concept for the state apparatus.

Speaking to the press after reporting the plan to Vice President Hamzah Haz, State Minister of Administrative Reforms Feisal Tamin said on Tuesday that necessary steps would be taken to alter the current working attitude of state apparatus to a more efficient and productive manner.

"The President has insinuated that our apparatus lacks quality, professionalism and drive. This must be addressed in order to have a dedicated and spirited bureaucracy," he said, without disclosing the details of the concept.

In February, Megawati resembled the bureaucracy to a "trash can" and urged the civil servants to be in tune with people's aspirations. --JP
