Govt rebuked for neglecting art

CIREBON, West Java: Cirebon Cultural Council (DKC) lashed out on Tuesday at the Cirebon municipality government for paying little attention to cultural events in the city.

DKC chairman Achmad Syubanuddin Alwy said that the government had refused to support funding for JakArt@2004: Festival A La Carte in Cirebon, which was held on Saturday and Sunday, and attended by some 180 artistes from 11 countries.

Separately, Cirebon deputy mayor Agus Al Wafier rejected the accusation, saying that the government failed to put money into the event because the event's organizing committee proposed the funding only on Wednesday last week, which was too close to the event's deadline. -- JP
